Cardboard boxes Northern Ireland

Police have said an empty cardboard box was the only item taken during two burglaries at the homes of elderly north Belfast residents.

In the first incident an elderly man was knocked to the ground and had a hand put over his mouth just after answering a knock at the door at around 7.30pm in the Graymount Drive area on Monday.

When the resident was restrained by one man another searched his living room before making off with the empty cardboard box.

A third male is believed to have waited outside for the pair in an old type silver Vauxhall Vectra car.

This car was seen making off in the direction of Grays Lane.

The elderly man sustained a graze to his elbow as a result of the incident. His elderly sister, who was also in the house at the time, was not injured.

One of the men was described as being of medium build and having a local accent and swarthy skin, wearing dark clothing and a woollen hat.

The second was described as being approximately 6’ tall and of medium build with short dark hair.

In an earlier incident at about 7pm in Lawnview Street, an elderly woman was knocked to the ground when she too answered her door.

The man made off empty handed when the woman began shouting.

He was described as being aged in his 20s and clean shaven, wearing a black woollen hat, dark clothing and gloves.

The lady was not injured but left badly shaken by her ordeal.

Police are investigating a link between these incidents and have appealed for anyone with information to call the non-emergency number 101 or alternatively information can also be passed anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
